Etrian Odyssey IV: Legends of the Titan (Japanese: 世界樹の迷宮IV 伝承の巨神 Labyrinth of the World Tree IV: Great God of Legend) is a dungeon-crawler RPG for the Nintendo 3DS, released in Japan in July 2012, and internationally in 2013. It is the first of five games and three spinoffs in the series released for the Nintendo 3DS.

Story

This section contains some spoilers for this game. Read at your own risk.

The player starts as an adventurer in Tharsis, the city closest to the legendary tree, Yggdrasil. On the request of the Count, you obtain a Skyship and explore several labyrinths on the way to reaching Yggdrasil. Along the way, however, you encounter three other factions, a forest-dwelling race named Vessels and their Medium, an animal person race named Sentinels, and the humans that stayed by Yggdrasil, dubbed the Empire.

As you progress through strata, you learn more about the history of these factions and Yggdrasil – that Vessels and Sentinels were created by humans in the distant past, along with the holy tree, with the intent of bringing fertility back to dead lands, and that this infertility is encroaching again, leading to the Empire seeking out a means of reactivating the tree and sending Logre to Tharsis – and have to stop the Empire and its leader, Baldur. The tree, however, is reactivated, and assumes the form of the namesake titan, for you to stop.

After the game concludes, a new stratum is opened up, allowing players to explore a closed-off quarantine that sheds further light on the history of Yggdrasil, the people who created it, and the environment they found themselves in.
